Bringing a Little Mischief in Every Layer
Welcome!
I’m LJ, a Canadian 3D printing artist and the maker behind Side Quest Shenanigans. This site is my gallery for HueForge prints—layered 3D-printed artwork that blends colour, depth, and light into pieces that look like mini paintings (200x200MM).
If you want to jump right in, head to the Gallery linked above.
What’s a HueForge?
A HueForge is basically a 3D-printed painting.
Instead of ink or paint, each piece is built by stacking very thin layers of coloured filament. The colours blend when viewed from the front, and the layered depth tactile feeling really makes them come alive. People almost always react with a “Woah” and its definitely a natural conversation starter. It blends several artistic techniques into one piece, creating something truly eye-catching and unique. From recreations and interpretations of Vincent van Gough’s The Starry Night to modern pop culture fan art inspired pieces like K-Pop Demon Hunters it can be done.
How They're Made
Each HueForge mixes several art techniques into one process:
Start with a digital image. Make some fine adjustments for the HueForge program.
Using the special software you break it into down into a bunch of mono coloured layers and rebuild the colours layer by layer.
Convert the final design into a file a 3D printer understands.
Print it from scratch, most 200×200 mm pieces take about 4–8 hours of print time.
Depending on the complexity, a single HueForge can take anywhere from 10 to 50+ hours from concept to finished piece. Every print comes with its own challenges, and no two ever turn out exactly the same. It’s important to note that these prints are not done with injection molding and as such many variables come into play to make every print a little bit different.
About the Work Here
This gallery includes:
HueForge pieces I’ve designed myself
Prints I’ve sliced or recreated using the “blueprint” files (STLs and 3MFs) from the artists that have given me permission to recreate their blueprints from.
Even when using blueprints, each physical print takes time, attention, and its own custom frame. These aren’t mass-produced pieces they’re handcrafted iterations with their own quirks and personality.
Keeping It Ethical
Blueprint theft is a problem in the 3D printing world.
At SQS, the rule is simple:
If an artist’s STL/3MF or “blueprint” is used, that artist gets paid. Always.
Want Something Made?
I’m currently taking local commissions in the Ottawa area (pickup only).
